Implications of Amazon’s ‘Dragon Boat’ Plan

Amazon has extensive plans in the works to expand its fulfillment and delivery services to take on giants like UPS, FedEx, and even Alibaba. In a document featured by Bloomberg[1], it was revealed that Amazon’s expansion of fulfillment centers is part of a global expansion strategy. This “report envisioned a global delivery network that controls the flow of goods from factories in China and India to customer doorsteps in Atlanta, New York and London.”[2]

What implications will this hold for the supply chain and transportation industries?

Several market analysts, including Colin Sebastian of Baird Capital, are under the impression that “Amazon may be the only company with the fulfillment/distribution sophistication and scale to compete effectively with incumbent service providers.”[3] This market disruption would forever change the landscape of fulfillment and 3PL services. Furthermore with plans to disrupt Alibaba while rivaling U.S. based 3PL service giants, Amazon’s aggressive platform may consolidate services as never before resulting in lower SKU shipment costs and greater ease of use- a hallmark of Amazon’s services.

Amazon’s plan would culminate with the launch of a new venture called “Global Supply Chain by Amazon,” as soon as this year, the documents said[4].  Amazon has made its stance clear moving forward into the rapidly growing cross border e-commerce industry, which is expected to reach 1 trillion dollars in revenue by 2020.
